I have known Sharon since the 3rd grade when we met as students in the GATE program (Gifted And Talented Education). Once a week, a very small number of students were pulled out of each school in the district and bused to one classroom to spend the day together. We were categorized as kids who did exceptional in school, and whose thinking processes were unique, so I’m not totally surprised that we both ended up in careers related to creativity. Fast forward more than twenty years later, and Sharon owns the Pittsburg Performing Arts Academy on the same street that I own Nicole Barton Photography, in the historic Downtown of the city we grew up in.
Sharon contacted me recently in regards to shooting the portraits for her dancers, as they had a recital in the works. With just about one week’s notice we were able to coordinate a couple of days for the portraits and get the information out to the parents.
Her dancers came to the studio dressed in attire for tap, ballet, hip hop, lyrical dance, and more. We went through a series of poses, and the dancers also demonstrated some movements from their dance, bringing the portraits some life.
I offered prints and merchandise with these sittings, and I was able to get everyone’s orders to them within the week. Shortly after, Sharon contacted me about also shooting their recital. I was more than happy to accept!
I have shot sports and performances before, but not specifically a dance recital like this. There were special challenges because of all the movement and colored lighting, but with subject matter this amazing, how could one not end up with some gorgeous images?
I positioned myself high on a balcony and caught the action as performers of all styles and ages graced the stage of the historic California Theater in Old Town Pittsburg.
In addition to dancers, there were also vocalists and musicians. I really enjoyed the variety of the show and the quality of the performances.
Images from the recital were made available to parents that same week, and as a Mommy of a dancer myself, I would be very happy to have images like these of my own child performing, and I hope they were as happy with them as I was.
